Second Edition. Memoirs of the celebrated Duke of Berwick, Marshal of France, the natural son of James Duke of York, afterwards James II, by Arabella Churchill, sister of the Duke of Marlborough. They cover the period down to 1705, with a continuation to 1734 by the Abbé Hooke, and prefatory éloges by Bolingbroke and Montesquieu. Berwick fled to France with his father in 1688 after an unsuccessful attempt to oppose the Prince of Orange and was naturalized in 1703. He distinguished himself in twenty-nine campaigns, his most famous victory being that of Almanza, the only battle on record in which an English general commanding a French army defeated an English army commanded by a Frenchman.
